Metamod and curl / php code

Trying to make this curl call work - works in mod_php ( in 1.5 - in 1.7 - using metamod? - does not seem to work -)
<?php
    $ch = curl_init("http://redacted");
    $output = curl_exec($ch);
    print "$output";
curl_close($ch);
?>

gives blank -

If you're using it in MetaMod, don't include the <?php and ?> parts. They will make it fail. Just put in the raw code in the middle.
